Conditions Orthodontics Treat
Orthodontics is the specialty of dentistry that corrects misaligned teeth and jaws to a more comfortable and healthy bite. Here are some of the typical issues Dr. Sema can treat:
Gaps in teeth are most often caused by either missing teeth or teeth that aren’t necessarily wide enough to fill out the space along the jawbone. This results in them drifting apart because they have more room to move around freely. Braces can bring the teeth together and stop the teeth from wandering around.
An overbite can have a multitude of causes and is even affected by genetics. Sometimes there can be an over-development of the jawbone which causes the top teeth to go beyond the lower teeth. When the bite is closed it appears that the top teeth are too far forward and cover the lower teeth.
Underbites are just the opposite of an overbite. Similarly, it is caused by either an underdeveloped upper jaw or an overdeveloped lower jaw. In some cases this can lead to jaw dysfunction or quickened rates of tooth wear from uneven chewing between the front and back teeth.
The open bite is best identified when some of the teeth are unable to make contact when the mouth is in a closed position. This condition is often caused by thumb-sucking and can ultimately develop into issues with TMJ and speech impairment.
When the upper and lower jaws do not fit together correctly, it results in a cross bite. This can complicate one’s oral health and lead to gum disease and unnecessary wearing of the teeth. Another negative effect is bone loss in the jawbone from uneven pressures on the tooth roots.
Crowded teeth are due to a mismatch of jaw size and size of the teeth. Teeth that are crowded can be caused by a jaw that is too narrow. Dr. Sema recommends early treatment for these cases. Starting around the age of eight, a child can wear a palatal expander to broaden the jaw and dental arches. This often reduces the need for permanent teeth needing extraction later on. Dr. Sema also recommends early treatment for some other bite issues as well.
